summary: All colonists in North America were subject to housing British officers and soldiers until March 24, 1776. Most of the colonists saw this law as tyranny and taking away their civil liberties. Alone, the law was insulting, but combined with earlier injustices it was a blowing point for the enraged colonists. The British however, saw this as completely fair because the soldiers were there for their own protection and well being. It was part of the colonists duty as British citizens and they needed to start contributing according to Parliament.
significance: It was significant because it kept the resentment of the colonists burning. This tyrannous action along with laws such as the Sugar and Tea Acts and the hated virtual representation in parliament led to the revolutionary war's beginning, which could have been prevented if salutary neglect hadn't been enforced by their mother country. The colonists were used to being self sufficient and these sudden taxes and laws were seen as taking away their liberties. student: Megan J. She confessed to signing a pact with the devil and compelling other women to join her in her "wrong-doings".
significance: This is significant because the association of broomsticks, wolves, and cats with witch craft had started there. This beginning influences today's society socially and culturally as children think of the image of the mysterious witch and her pets. Student: Priscilla L. |
Summary: in the mayflower compact, the main necessity for this document was to obtain order and peace within the colonies. It was so they would still have rules under god, but they would first have an elected personal in their midst, until England came over and altered everything.
Significance: This was significant because it was their first stand going against the England church and doing what they felt was right. This was their first piece of freedom and order that they wanted so badly that they left England to obtain. they felt in control and wise with their decision. Student: Rilley R. summary of common sense: In common sense, Thomas Paine addresses his belief that the government’s main purpose is simply protect the natural rights of the citizens. He explains that more people would find government a positive thing if they were a part of making the laws themselves. Paine goes on to explain how 1776 is a great time to break away from the unjust and sinful rule of Britain, logic that appealed to the many religious people in the American colonies. His main point is that the colonies need to break away from Britain and form their own democratic republic.
significance: Common sense is significant because it was able to be spread throughout all of the colonies. It was both simple and explanatory, along with having the ability to tie the diverse areas together in the spirit of revolution against an unfair monarchy. It was the main motivating factor to taking action instead of just claiming they wanted independence. Student: Melissa H. |
