Summary: This is a campaign button Ronald Reagan had when running for presidential office. Reagan won the presidency and had 2 terms in office. Before pursuing a career in politics, Reagan had been an actor and with his knowledge from acting he was able to appeal to a wide variety of paople and knew how to capture an audiences attention--this was a large advantage he had.
Significance: This campaign button is significant because it represent Reagan's era of movement back towards conservative values where Christian morals were largely upheld. This button also reflects the method in which he was elected--the support from evangelical Christians who believed he would support their values and believes. Student: Megan J. |
Summary: Ronald Reagan speaks of our defense policy, establishing that we are not one to start wars, we are never the aggressor, "we maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression to preserve freedom and peace, and we help our friends defend themselves". this shows and resolves Americas drive in the war and why we cannot be blamed or take responsibility for any destruction caused, but we will always help for our moral obligation whether or not we agree with the opposing side.
Significance: This is significant because it confirms our reasoning behind the war. It also exemplifies the treaties and guidelines that were made such as the open door policy. It shows that we are not instigators of war and that our overall drive is lead by peace and equality. Student: Rilley R. |
Summary: This speech is about how insulting it was for veterans to hear that they were expected to stand by and watch their country go into more wars after what they had went through. In the Winter Soldier Trials, American citizens learned the extent of how pride corrupted the minds of their military and how hypocritical their leaders were. This revelation led to denial of facts that everyone around the world knew: that America had tripped up and made a mistake that they couldn't let go, because of its pride.
Significance: This is significant because it shows direct accounts on what happened to America's World War II veterans and the horrors they had to go through because of the leader's orders. The accounts showed the corruption that influenced the once strong and confident commanders during times of war, hiding behind their petty excuses and weak reasoning. In addition to that, it shows the rest of the world how easy it was for the golden country to fall into the hands of greed and pride - deep enough to command their soldiers to torture the "oriental human beings", and lave them behind when they saw it fit. Summary: In this piece by Christian leader Jerry Falwell, he addresses that the country must move back to the religious and moral beliefs that the country was founded upon. He explained his belief that the media and lack of religion in school have affected the younger generations in a negative way. Falwell encouraged others to support conservative leaders that would help to improve the conditions of country by doing God's will. They must no longer be a silent majority if they want to help the country and remain free with good leaders making the morally right decisions.
Significance: In the 1980's when this was written, Falwell had just created the Moral Majority party that rallied behind conservative leaders, especially Reagan. In a time when issues like abortion and homosexuality were well talked about, this group aimed to maintain Christian values. They were against homosexuality and abortion, trying to get a reversal of the Roe v. Wade case that allowed abortion. They tried to block the adoption of the Equal Rights Amendment and denounced the SALT I and II treaties. Even though they disbanded in 1989, they were able to provide a lot of support for conservative candidates and increased voter registration. Student: Melissa H. |
